Why a Website? - and Why Now?
Why a Website? - and Why Now?
I established Number 14 Advisory Group in 2015. For most of the decade since, the practice operated without a conventional website. That wasn't because I underestimated the value of an online presence, but because the business simply didn't require one. The practice grew organically through relationships, referrals, and direct engagements - conversations led to projects, projects delivered results, and results generated new conversations. The model was simple, effective, and sufficient.
The more relevant question is not why it took over ten years to launch a website, but rather what changed. The answer is straightforward: the practice has evolved, and the nature of the work continues to shift.
The Nature of the Work Has Changed
Much of my historical work was delivered through hourly engagements focused on immediate operating needs, specific projects, and tactical priorities. While that work remains valuable, it routinely highlighted a broader pattern: the initial issue presented by a client is rarely the issue that matters most. A sales problem frequently points to an underlying operational bottleneck, an execution failure stems from an unclear strategic choice, and a technology initiative exposes gaps in process or accountability.
Increasingly, my engagements focus directly on where these core functions overlap. The questions have become explicitly strategic:
Where should the business focus its limited time and resources?
What is preventing strategy from being successfully translated into execution?
Which operating capabilities are required to support long-term growth?
Where can technology and artificial intelligence genuinely improve performance?
Which core assumptions should be tested before leadership commits capital?
These are not merely larger tactical assignments. They demand diagnosis, judgment, structure, and a deep understanding of how decisions in one area ripple across the entire organization. Their value is determined not by hours billed, but by the clarity of thinking provided and the quality of outcomes that follow.
Making the Thinking More Visible
Until now, that strategic thinking existed almost entirely inside individual engagements - expressed through working sessions, private analysis, proprietary frameworks, and direct client collaboration. The obvious limitation of that model is that unless you were already working with me, the thinking remained invisible.
A website fundamentally changes that dynamic. Its purpose is not to serve as a digital brochure, but to create a transparent platform that makes the practice understandable - defining the business situations I address, my approach to problem-solving, the assumptions I test, and the core principles that shape the work.
Strategic advisory work cannot be evaluated from a static list of services alone. Prospective clients need to see how an advisor navigates complexity, structures decisions, challenges assumptions, and drives execution. This platform makes that underlying thinking visible and examinable over time.
A Shift in Medium, Not in Philosophy
While the medium is changing, the core philosophy remains untouched. The work still begins with clarity of thought and disciplined execution. It remains grounded in the reality that strategic recommendations are meaningless if an organization cannot translate them into practical decisions, daily behaviours, and measurable results.
Success still depends on establishing the right conditions: ensuring priorities are explicit, ownership is clear, operating systems support intended outcomes, and leadership has a reliable cadence for tracking progress. The website does not change these principles - it gives them a visible, lasting home for frameworks and insights that would otherwise stay locked within private client work.
Creating Room for the Practice to Evolve
The website also establishes a foundation for how the practice can grow from here. Not every organizational challenge demands a traditional, full-scope consulting engagement. In many cases, leaders benefit from direct access to structured frameworks, diagnostic tools, and self-applied guidance.
Over time, I intend to explore new ways to make these frameworks more broadly accessible. While direct advisory engagements will remain central to the practice, the business should not be restricted by traditional professional service delivery models. The website creates the platform necessary to support that broader evolution.
Why Now?
Launching now is a recognition that word-of-mouth, direct referrals, and existing relationships - while essential - are no longer sufficient to reflect where the practice is going. The underlying thinking requires a permanent home, the value of the work needs to be understood beyond isolated projects, and the practice requires a scalable platform to support high-impact strategic engagements.
Releasing a website a decade into practice might seem late on paper, but it is not an effort to catch up, nor is it a beginning. It is a deliberate articulation of what the practice has become - and a foundation for what it will accomplish next.
